Epilogues can be tricky. As a rule, I don't want to know what happens too far down the future (my imagination takes care of that!), but if i've enjoyed a certain romance and truly believe in the couple, I want to know more. Just not *too* much more. In my mind, the courtship - or the "honeymoon period" if you like - lasts forever. But i'm someone that's into the thrill of the here and now. Totally flaky! ;)
I'm with you Daphne - epilogues can either work very well or they just feel REALLY clunky....they just don't fit. I have to say I loved the epilogues in Dream Man and Cry No More (Linda Howard).
Sometimes though, an author can avoid an epilogue if he/she has a sequel - that way the reader can revisit favourite characters. Saying that, such 'visitations' can also be clunky...the characters have to remain true to who they are, not act like they've been possessed.

I'm an epilogue girl all the way. The more sappy it is the better. *sigh*
A book just is not finished without a good epilogue.
